Melamchi Municipality is one of the 12 local bodies located in the Sindhupalchok District. According to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Nepal on Mangsir 1, 2071, Melamchi municipality was formed by the seven village development committees of Sindhukot, Jamire, Talamarang, Shikharpur, Bansbari, Melamchi, and Fatkashila. According to the notice published in the gazette on the 27th of Falgun 2073 during the restructuring of the state after the new constitution, 4 village development committees (Votechaur, Haibung, Thakni and Duvochaur) were adjusted with the former Melamchi municipality to form the current Melamchi municipality. Melamchi municipality is divided into 13 wards.

You can reach here from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, through the Araniko highway to Jirokilo and through Jirokilo-Melamchi-Helambu. Apart from this, one can reach this city through an alternative road from headquarter Chautara and also through another alternative route from the capital Kathmandu (Bhotechour).

The total area of ​​Melamchi municipality is 158.16 square kilometres. Occupying 6.315 percent of Sindhupalchok district, this municipality occupies 0.115 percent of the total area of ​​Nepal. The lowest point of this city with an altitude of 702.53 meters (from sea level) is in Ward No. 13.

Indrawati and Panchpokhari Rural Municipality are located to the east of Melamchi Municipality. And Shankharpur municipality of Kathmandu and Shivapuri rural municipality of Nuwakot is on the western border of this municipality. Similarly, there are Panchpokhari and Helambu Rural Municipality to the north of Melamchi. Mandan Deupur municipality of Kavre district is connected with its southern border.

Cultivable land

About 65.44 percent (105.11 square km) of the total area of ​​Melamchi Municipality is covered by cultivable land. In other words, agriculture is done on about 9195 hectares of land in the municipality spread over a total area of ​​15561 hectares. Potatoes, Kiwi, Rice, Millet, Fapar, Maize, Lemon, Tea (Botechaur) etc. are planted in the arable land. Modern commercial cultivation is found in various places. People here are earning good income from fish farming, animal husbandry and commercial farming.

Population of Melamchi Municipality

According to the census of 2068, there was a total population of 45343 including 9992 households. On the basis of population density, about 366 people lived in a 1 km area. The census had 21729 females and 23614 males. According to the recent census of 2078, the total population of Melamchi is 41063. Similarly, the household number is 11180. There are 19963 males (48.6%) and 21100 females (51.4%) in the total population. The data for 2078 showed that the population decreased compared to 2068.

According to 2078, 2.4% population are physically or mentally disable.

Local Election 2022: Number of Voters

 Melamchi Municipality is in the Sindhupalchowk district of Bagmati Pradesh. There are a total of 39,205 voters here in the local elections of 30 Baisakh, 2079. Out of which 20276 are male and 18929 are female. There are 14 polling stations and 45 polling stations.

60.2 square kilometres of the total area of ​​the Melamchi Municipality is covered by forests. Some parts of the forest here are in the Shivpuri Nagarjuna National Park. The forest covers 37 per cent of the total area of ​​the municipality. There are a total of 79 community forests and 31 Kabuliyat forests in Melamchi municipality.

Weather

Due to the geographical diversity, the climate in different areas of the municipality is different. The amount of cold increases with the increase in altitude. There are places like Bhotechour, Haibung, Gufa, and Chankhu which are cool all twelve months along with the Melamchi river bank area where hot air blows. In this municipality, there is summer from Chaitra to early Ashoj and winter from Ashoj to Falgun.

Melamchi municipality has an average temperature in the lower part (below 2000 meters), that is, there are not too many winters and summers. Cold temperatures remain in such high altitudes (more than 2000 meters). The average annual temperature here is 20.8 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in winter is 13.3 degrees Celsius and in summer it reaches 20.8 degrees Celsius. In this city, it rains a lot in winter, but the average annual rainfall is 1615 mm.

Caste & Ethnic groups

Melamchi Municipality is inhabited by many ethnic groups. The main ethnic groups here are Tamang, Magar, Gurung, Majhi, Danuwar etc. People living here speak their native language according to their caste.
