Ashman Lopchan Tamang is a well-known name in the world of Tamang Selo music. He is Born in Batashe (Bhuwagaun village) of Chautara Sangachokgadhi Municipality-3, Sindhupalchok. He was born on 25 March , 1995. He is especially recognized as a leading voice of the traditional Khandokey Selo style. Along with singing, he is also a skilled dancer, model, and media professional.
Ashman began his career at Radio Sindhu 105 MHz, where he became the first Tamang-language news reader of the district. He is known as the first Tamang-language news reader of Sindhupalchok district.
Early Life
Ashman started his early schooling at Shree Rameshwor Basic School near his village. Later, his family moved to Chautara, where he spent most of his childhood. He continued his studies at Shree Bandevi Secondary School in Bhulbhule. The school was simple, and students would sit on mats to study. He was an average student but very active in extracurricular activities like karate, dance, and football. His journey as a dancer began during a School Day program in class 5. He studied at Bandevi School from class 1 to 10. He completed his SLC in 2067 B.S.
Career
Ashman joined Radio Sindhu 105 MHz (the first community radio in Sindhupalchok) as a volumteer. At that time he earn Rs. 3000 as a salary. Then, he began reading Tamang news in radio. He also hosted Nepali programs, including the talent show “Khoji Pratibhako.” A small incident in the studio made him realize how listeners imagine radio hosts differently, which encouraged him to explore video journalism. After gaining some experience, he decided to move to Kathmandu to grow further. He eventually joined CJMC FM in Dhumbarahi as a technician with a monthly salary of Rs. 6,000. Living in Narayanthan with room rent and daily travel costs. During this time, he also developed an interest in modeling. Although he had contacts in the media world, no one was ready to give him a chance. Even when he offered to invest in his own music video, people did not take him seriously. After six months of struggle and no progress, Ashman almost returned home.
On his way home in an Araniko Yatayat bus, he imagined a song but couldn’t write it immediately because he only had a simple keypad phone. After reaching home, he wrote the song:
“Asyangki chhori kya ramri, herdama purneko jun jasti…”
This song became the start of his journey as a singer. Though he never planned to become a singer, he chose music. With the support of composer Bishal Kaltan and arranger Chand Singh, he recorded his first song. It became popular on local radios and earned good attention. Over time, he wrote and sang several songs, but his breakthrough came with “Makai Ta Bhutyo, Balla Po Tamangko Hul Uthyo”, a song that turned him into a leading voice of Tamang Selo. The song helped revive the Khandokey Selo identity and brought his name into the national spotlight.
In more than a decade of music, Ashman has recorded around four dozen songs. He writes, sings, performs in his own music videos, and often edits them himself. His popular songs include “Balla Po Tamangko Hul Uthyo,” “Hammaisari Khailala,” “Wala Wala Ribbon,” “Yarsali Dosti,” and “Chaitri.” He has also collaborated in lok-dohori, Sherpa melodies, and modern folk styles. He is continuning his singing journey till now.
He has performed across Nepal and in several countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, the UK, India, and South Korea. He also runs Tipling Media House, continuing his work in both music and media.
